Cardholders can earn 5% cash back on up to the grand $500 spent (then 1%) each billing cycle in your top eligible exercise category. Because of the spending cap, you can only earn $25 each month by the rewards rate drops to 1%. Consider combining it with spanking rewards card, like the Wells Fargo Active Cash, which earns 2% cash rewards for your purchases.

Our Take

The Amex Gold Card is best for cooks and restaurant aficionados who love to proceed. It does have a high $250 annual fee, except, so it should only be considered by people who can get everything out of the card.

That said, the Gold Card does subsidizes a sizable welcome offer and a few annual statement credits to help partially offset that annual fee. And while it does subsidizes a good rewards rate, Amex Membership Rewards points will be more or less notable depending on how they're redeemed. For example, redeeming points for statement credits will net you 0.6 cent per expose while using them to book flights through American Express Travel will net 1 cent per point.

Another high-end recede credit card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers versatile rewards redemption options and annual statement credits in skill for a $550 annual fee.

Two of its best features are its 1:1 present transfer rate (1 point:1 partner mile/point) to Chase's airline and hotel partners and its 50% redemption bonus for redeeming your rewards points for recede through Chase Ultimate Rewards. The Citi Double Cash supplies one of the best rewards rates for a credit card minus an annual fee, but it doesn't offer a welcome bonus like many of its closest competitors.

Our Take

Best helpful to Delta flyers who travel at least a few times a year, the Delta SkyMiles Gold supplies dining rewards and flight amenities.

It includes an annual $100 Delta trips statement credit every year you spend $10,000 or more with the card, a free checked bag and a 20% in-flight savings, but its strongest features are its competitive rewards rate and lucrative welcome accounts. However, the value of your miles will vary depending on how they're redeemed. Their primary use is to book airfare, so anunexperienced forms of redemption may not provide the best return.

Last fall, I traveled to ancient Egypt. It was an easy trip -- no COVID procomplaints, airport security lines or weather delays. I just climbed into a cinematic motion chair, strapped on a high-resolution VR headset and got swept into Queen Nefertari's lavish tomb, a labyrinth of chambers covered in gleaming floor-to-ceiling paintings depicting the queen's life and times.

A loquacious apparition of Nefertari herself, floating in midair and draped in a diaphanous blue gown, aimed out notable sights with a graceful sweep of her digital arms.

The intelligent virtual-reality experience is part of Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs, a dazzling, tech-heavy exhibit at San Francisco's de Young Museum that illuminates the life and achievements of Ramses II. More than 3,300 ages ago, the celebrated pharaoh ruled Egypt for 67 ages during an era of great prosperity and empire for the republic, and the exhibit has the epic Ramses II-era royal statues and gold burial masks to despise it.

"The temples he erected, statues he commissioned, monuments he inscribed over Egypt and Nubia, and funerary temple and royal tomb he built were reminders of his earthly noteworthy and closeness to the gods," Renée Dreyfus, George and Judy Marcus Distinguished Curator in Charge of Ancient Art at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, said in a statement. "The proliferation of his name led to it becoming almost a synonym for kingship."

The traveling show was curated by archaeologist Zahi Hawass, Egypt's former minister of antiquities, and runs at the de Young over Feb. 12 before continuing to Paris. It assembles more than 180 remarkably preserved used treasures from the time of Ramses II, as well as from hundreds of ages before and after him: sarcophagi, ornate tomb relics, beaded jewelry, a mongoose and cats, mummified and likely presented as an offering to the gods. Some of the objects have never beforehand left Egypt.

The exhibit also boasts its share of 21st-century flourishes to make 19th Dynasty details more tangible and accessible. Drone photography, for example, contributes imagery to a dynamic multimedia re-creation of one of Ramses the Great's biggest army victories, the Battle of Kadesh of 1275 BCE in contradiction of the Hittite army of what's now Turkey.

One gallery devises the elaborately decorated wooden outer coffin of an elite artisan who helped beget and decorate royal tombs during the reign of Ramses II and his father, Seti I. Giant displays lining the gallery walls, and suspended from its ceiling, project the coffin's elaborately painted scenes as theatrically lit photo murals. Smaller displays hang above glass cases containing other old artifacts, to highlight every detail.

In this era of immersive exhibits that can steep you in a painter's world over 65 million pixels, care must be taken not to let technology elements overshadow the art, says Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

"But if done right," Campbell told me, "the tech components will add excellent context and enhance the visitor experience, and can act as a bridge into art, an invitation for new audiences to connect with works of art in our galleries."

Indeed, nothing turns up the immediacy here like the VR go, which serves as a tantalizing time capsule of Egypt's evil Golden Age, courtesy of an HP Reverb G2 gaming headset that issues a hyperrealistic virtual experience.

I've been on a few virtual-reality adventures, but none as multi-sensory as this one, which transports you over 360-degree sandstorms to reach two monuments Ramses II built for his beloved wife Nefertari.

Comfy pod-chairs that crooked, turn and shake make it almost impossible to have you're not actually floating through the entrance to the huge rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel just like the digital representation of the queen.

As I descended the steep steps of Nefertari's famous tomb into one of its chambers, I thought I great tumble out of my chair and down the stairs onto the stone down. I constantly turned my head to catch the sights over both shoulders. A smell component even delivered quick rushes of six scents, including frankincense, lavender and gunpowder, via a small dispenser hardwired into the chair. Ahhh, the aromas of 1200 BCE.

The cinematic motion chairs in Ramses + Nefertari: Journey to Osiris crooked, turn and shake to give a sense of movement.

World Heritage Exhibitions

Virtual reality hasn't precisely become the mainstream technology some had predicted, but with the bshining equipment and software, VR can truly shine as an art form, especially in moody experiences like this one, titled Ramses + Nefertari: Journey to Osiris and had by World Heritage Exhibitions.

"The VR experience serves an educational end, and really brings to life the stories, people and places that our visitors get acquainted with in the exhibition," Campbell said. "With a fun crooked, of course."

The dreamlike experience lasted more than 10 minutes, and honestly, I didn't want it to end.

Those who feel the same may be heartened to learn that part of the proceeds from show tickets will help fund ongoing efforts to excavate and restore the 700-foot-long tomb of Ramses II. Ancient tomb raiders plundered it, and flooding later left it severely damaged.

Archaeologist Zahi Hawass is leading a team that's employed to restore the tomb of Ramses II, which was badly damaged by flooding.

In this article:

No matter the season, it's easy to neglect your workouts, especially if it consuming leaving your home. That's why many people prefer to utilize in their own homes. Space can sometimes be an suppose, so buying a big piece of fitness equipment can be out of the demand unless it's something you know will get used. If you're looking for a share of equipment that doesn't take up a lot of room and provides a full body workout, you may want to consider a rowing machine. Rowing machines beleaguered different muscle groups, which include your legs, arms, back and core. Rowing machines also performed a good cardio workout in as little as 15 minutes. Another sure thing about owning a rowing machine is that they are planned to be easily stored at home, and can usually be folded up when not in use.

Factors to consider

  • Space

Make sure you have enough space— lengthwise and widthwise—to hold a rowing machine.

  • Storage space

Consider if you need to be able to hide the rower upright or if there is enough room to spare.

  • Compatible with all users

If multiple republic are going to be using the machine, make sure it's user-friendly for all heights and fitness levels.

  • Price

Rowing machines can be expensive. Determine if your budget fits a standard or high-tech rower.

  • Types of rowers

There are various rowing machine styles to pick from such as hydraulic, flywheel, water and magnetic.

Rowing machines have evolved in fabricate over the years. Now you have smart rowing machines like the Peloton Row, which are a step up from traditional rowers. We tested different models to settle the best rowing machines on the market. Keep reading to see which fits your home best and pick one up this year.

Giselle Castro-Sloboda

The Echelon Row-S is the ideal rowing machine if you're a rowing beginner. Assembly was easy enough that only one person was obligatory to put it together. It's not the fanciest looking machine, but it felt sturdy and smooth and got the job done. I counterfeit it less intimidating than the smart rowers and appreciated parts of its fabricate, like the handle's protective covering to prevent blisters. I also accepted the footplate design the most of all the rowing machines because it felt intuitive to use the fastener straps.

Additionally, the lever underneath the machine that allows you to hide the rower upright was easy to find and lift. It's also on the lighter side, which invents it easy to move around. Despite being light, the machine can hold up to 350 pounds (158.7 kg) comfortably; therefore, it's versatile for people of all sizes and weights.

The ragged rowing machine has a small metric screen to measure distance, number of strokes per minute and your split time. Echelon upgraded this notion, making a 22-inch HD touchscreen with a 180-degree flip adjustment. You will need an Echelon Live and On-Demand class membership for an instant fee to use this machine. There are three levels of membership to fit your budget: a two-year membership ($29.16 a month); a year membership ($33.33 a month); or a $35 month-to-month option.

Echelon has a library of thousands of classes besides rowing, including yoga, cycling, HIIT or strength training. I accepted that the library had beginner row classes, warmups and cooldowns, scenic, low impact and bootcamp rowing sessions. It's easy to increase or decrease the resistance by clicking the buttons on each side of the achieve. The onscreen metrics are easy to read and behindhand. Overall, with the classes included, I liked the Echelon Row-S as a good mind to rowing or if you want a less paunchy machine in your home.

Pros

  • Light and easy to use if you've never rowed before
  • Versatile for republic of various weights and heights
  • Easy to store upright

Cons

  • Plastic fabricate looks like it may not be the most durable
  • Function is runt if you don't sign up for Echelon class membership
  • Warranty only lasts for a year

Peloton

Peloton has revolutionized rowing machines by creating the Peloton Row. It's the obliging smart rowing machine that teaches you how to row and corrects your form. I will admit the effect tag was higher than I anticipated and at $3195, it's the most expensive rowing machine on this list. However, there's no denying the features found in the Peloton Row are impressive.

The congress of the machine was customer-friendly since the Peloton delivery team sets up the machine in your home so you don't have to. It's sleek and all-black with touches of red, which leftovers true to the Peloton aesthetic. It also has a 24-inch HD touchscreen that's adjustable and easy to rotate. I had concerns with the size of the machine because it's on the larger side (it's 8 feet by 2 feet and weighs 156 pounds). I was able to fit it in my apartment, but keep this in mind if you have runt space. An anchor is included with your order so you can hide the machine safely upright, but you'll want to make sure your ceiling can sure its length.

The rowing machine is appropriate for various heights making from 4 foot 11 to 6 foot 5 inches and can hold up to 300 pounds, which makes it ideal for most users. I accepted the Velcro straps since they make a big inequity when you're trying to get in and out of the machine hasty. The ergonomic seat is cushioned enough so it's poor for longer periods of sitting. You'll also find a liquids bottle and phone holder right beneath the handle, which most rowing machines don't have.

Using the Peloton Row is an accepted unlike the others I had testing rowing machines. Before you take a class you have to calibrate your rowing form. One valuable thing to note is that the Peloton Row has sensors that detect the set of the handle and seat. This is based on the beside of the handle strap pulled out from the base as well as the set of the seat along the rail. Once your rowing form is customized you can bewitch to Just Row, do a Scenic Row or take a rowing class from the Peloton roster. This is where another feature known as Form Assist comes into play.

Form Assist supplies real-time feedback on your form during class using the same sensors from the calibration treat. Peloton says the rower measures your position hundreds of times a transfer to generate Form Assist and track form errors. You have the option to turn off Form Assist, but it defeats the purpose of owning a Peloton Row. When it's on, an image of a digital populate sitting on a rowing machine shows up on the left hand side of the camouflage and moves in sync with you. If your form is off, you'll see the person's body highlight in red the part of the caress where you need to correct your form.

After the class is over, you can see your rowing stats and Form Rating collect that uses a circle graph and shows you a total collect out of 100. Beneath that, you'll see a detailed explanation on where you're manager errors and tips on how to fix them. I saw improvement in my form thanks to the Form Assist feature rather speedily during the period I tested the Peloton Row. Additionally, like the rest of Peloton's machines, you have to sign up for the All-Access membership ($44 a month). The plus side is since the screen swivels, you can frankly take other classes that require you to be on the floor.

Personally, I find the Peloton Row's price steep and the machine is larger than I would've celebrated. However, I think it will appeal to existing Peloton members and some new members alike. If money is no object and you're serious in rowing, you'll love the Peloton Row.

Pros:

  • Quiet
  • Form Assist teaches you how to row and improves form
  • Easy to consume if you're familiar with Peloton programs
  • Foot straps are easy to slip on and off

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Large and may not fit all spaces

If you don't mind spending a itsy-bitsy more on a rowing machine then you'll love the Hydrow. While testing rowing machines, I got input from the Wellness team and we collectively agreed that Hydrow was a unruffled and high quality rowing machine. Not only does Hydrow look sleek and futuristic, even the stride feels smoother and natural.

CNET Lab Technician Gianmarco helped rendered the rowing machines on this list and found the Hydrow to be one of the easier ones to put together. The biggest challenge was carrying the delivery box because the base is very heavy. Therefore, keep in mind you might need a transfer set of hands to help you carry this machine.

Hydrow works best wherever your Wi-Fi is strongest. This machine uses electromagnetic drag technology to mimic the outdoor rowing understood. It consists of a 22-inch touchscreen that gives you retrieve to over 4,000 workouts whether you're using the machine or the Hydrow app. To view the Hydrow classes, you will need an all-access membership which is an transfer $38 a month, but gives you unlimited profiles for your family.

I celebrated that the Hydrow looked more futuristic than other rowing machines I've seen. However, I wish the footplate was more updated to match the machine. Instead, it has the same nylon foot straps as most rowing machines, where you have to fiddle with the strap to tighten or loosen it. I find this style restrictive and can make it hard to get out of the machine if you're actions a HIIT circuit, for example.

Although high-tech, the Hydrow is easy to use, and the seat feels glum and smooth while gliding back and forth. The machine isn't too loud, which is a plus and shows how far rowing machines have come from their modern models. The programs offer a variety to choose from, and I celebrated that I could choose a shorter or longer workout depending on how much time I had. If you're a seasoned rower, you can adjust the resistance on the machine afore taking a class by going into the settings and exaltering the drag settings. The default resistance setting is set to 104 and is recommended if you're just unsheathing started with rowing.

Hydrow also has beginner classes that roar you how to properly row to get used to the fight. This to be something most of the rowing machines I tested offered, which is optimal since some people may initially fights to get proper form.

My main concern with Hydrow was that it was bigger than I imagined for a modern rowing machine. You also have to engage the anchor separately to store it upright; it retails for $80 and is essentially a strap screwed to the wall. I erroneous this pricey, especially since the unit itself is expensive. Without the ability to store the machine upright, it made me query if people with smaller spaces could own it. However, there is a smaller version, the Hydrow Wave (more on this machine later).

Pros

  • High-end rower with a unruffled ride
  • Easy to assemble on your own
  • Well built

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Bigger than putrid rowing machine, won't fit all spaces
  • You have to pay fantastic for the anchor that stores it upright

Aviron supplies two types of rowers to choose from: the Aviron Impact Series and Aviron Tough Series rower. For this review, I tested the Aviron Impact Series version. Aviron gives a unique spin to indoor rowing with its interactive workout programs. This is especially appealing if you enjoy video games. The machine's resistance is made up of dual air and magnetic resistance. It is one of the lighter machines on the list, weighing only 97 pounds (43.9 kg), and its base folds proper for easy storage. Another thing to note is that you'll want to set your rower in an area with strong Wi-Fi connection to get the best gaming experience.

Similar to the anunexperienced smart rowing machines, Aviron has a 22-inch touchscreen where you can retrieve various workouts, including scenic tours, competing with family and friends, guided programs, arcades and virtual games. You can even log into your streaming overhauls accounts such as Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus and YouTube after you row.

To access Aviron's programs, you will need an Aviron membership ($25 a month). The downside is there aren't live classes, so this considerable not be the right machine for you if that's something you want.

I celebrated that the design included a padded handle since I'm prone to blisters. The seat sat higher from the ground than the anunexperienced rowers, which makes it user-friendly if you're a tall persons and prefer the extra room to hop on and off. The foot placement is a itsy-bitsy wider than other rowing machines, which is helpful because when placed too halt together it's uncomfortable, particularly if you have longer legs. The seat had a itsy-bitsy more padding than your traditional rower seat and comfortably glided up and down the base.

I'm not a big gamer, but I tried out some of the games Aviron supplies and found them entertaining enough that it was a distraction from realizing you're acting out. If you dread the idea of working out, this could be a good option for you steady exercising will feel more like entertainment than a task.

If you bewitch to opt for Aviron's upgraded rower, the Strong series will cost you unexperienced $300. I was genuine excited to try EnergyFit's Ski-Row because I love the idea of a rowing machine populate two-in-one. The Ski-Row does just that by combining skiing and rowing. It offers two machines: The Ski-Row Air + Pwr and the Ski-Row Air. For this appraise, I tested out a Ski-Row Air+Pwr. Having used anunexperienced two-in-one fitness machines like the Concept 2 rowers and Ski Ergs afore, I knew I would have to compare the Ski-Row to them to see if the perform does it justice.

I first came across the Ski-Row at what time seeing it on a social media ad and plan it was a clever concept. Our lab technician erroneous this machine the most time-consuming one to assemble because he followed the manual arrange guide. However, EnergyFit told us that most customers after a video tutorial that can be found on YouTube which establishes it easier to put the machine together.

I was surprised at how sturdy and well-made it was to withstand two types of fitness organization. I did think some details could use some upgrading. For example, the monitor you use to adjust the resistance gazed dated, the lever used to lower and raise the base was made of plastic. which made me question if it would break off at what time a lot of wear and tear, and the rope attached to the cope didn't look as durable as the ones on latest rowing machines. When adjusted to the skiing position, I understanding the ski handles looked and felt legit, and it was the lustrous height (for grabbing the handles), even for shorter individuals.

I started by testing the rowing aspect of it. Ski-Row has your outmoded footplate with nylon straps and an adjustable base. The machine uses air and magnetic resistance as you are rowing or skiing. This is unlike the Ski-Row Air, which only uses air to grand its machine. The monitor on the Ski-Row reads time, distance, stroke rate, pace, resistance level and calories burned. It functions more or less the same way as a Concept 2 rowing machine and lets you connect via Bluetooth to an ANT Plus Heart Rate monitor. Ski-Row is also connected to Gymtrakr, an iOS and Android app that can sync your visited to the console.

From the rowing perspective, it is contrast to a traditional rowing machine but can get insensible if you're looking for a more interactive experience. If you're adding circuits to your unnovel workout, it may be less of an issue real you'll probably just focus on the time or distance on the monitor.

My accepted part about this machine was using the ski trainer option. It's also a quick transition changing the rower into a ski trainer by the insensible of a lever. Ski trainers are still a fairly new understanding, and not many of these exist on the market. I'm a short woman, so I was glad I could comfortably near up to grab each of the handles while the machine was upright.

The skiing option was reminiscent of comic a Concept 2 Ski Erg, which I considered a plus. I consider the Ski-Row is a great piece of equipment to have at home (or at the gym) if you're looking for a two-in-one machine that won't take up wonderful room. Even though it has room for improvement, it's a solid allotment if you're an experienced rower or ski enthusiast who wants the sect to train indoors.

Pros

  • Unique design makes it two machines in one
  • Ideal if you're exiguous in space and want two machines
  • Sturdy enough to withstand both rowing and indoor skiing

Cons

  • Heavy machine that averages at least two people to assemble
  • Monitor is passe and doesn't have a touchscreen
  • Certain pieces don't look as durable as they necessity be

The LIT Strength Machine impressed me by how the creators challenged the outmoded rowing machine. This machine is an all-in-one rower, Pilates reformer and nation trainer.

Unlike other machines on the list, LIT is a soaks rower withs resistance ranging from 10 to 40 pounds (4.5 to 18.1 kg) of soaks in a dual-tank drum. The good thing is you won't ever have to irritable the water, because the machine comes with a lifetime supply of chlorine tablets.

Even understanding I tested this machine in the brand's showroom, I learned that LIT establishes assembly easy for customers by delivering it 85% preassembled. The black and red design makes it look sleek and futuristic. The machine also has resistance bands (up to 100 pounds or 45.3 kg of resistance) looped approximately both sides of the rower handle, ready for nation training or Pilates exercises.

LIT currently offers three packages. There's Starter, which includes resistance bands, ankle cuffs (for Pilates) and handles. Then there's Performance, which offers everything in the bundle, including a heart rate sensor, machine mat, strength bar, rapidly bands and power bands. The final current package is July 4th, which includes everything Performance accounts minus the heart rate sensor and a machine mat.

I favorite that this machine (similar to the Aviron) had a wider footplate, so if you're tall or have wider feet, it accounts plenty of room. I also learned it was planned to allow you to use your hamstrings more during the workout. The rowing handle is also properly coated with protective rubber layering to minimize the chances of blisters.

This is one of the few machines that doesn't have a touchscreen or monitor, but classes are offered through the LIT On-Demand app, which you can entrance on your smartphone and is both IOS and Android compatible. LIT's membership costs $25 a month and comes with a three-month complimentary territory upon receiving your rower. The machine has a dinky device holder so you can view the class from your streaming procedure comfortably.

Upon using this machine, it felt like what the true rowing distinguished should be like. Even though I was on land, it felt nice to hear the soaks as I rowed instead of a fan. Adjusting the resistance was easy real it has a dial that is labeled with levels 1 above 4. However, this may not be the machine for you if you're into keeping track of your stats or looking at a monitor.

LIT had the most depressed seat because it was padded and helped me feel more supported at what time rowing. I was put through a demo to try the different aspects of the machine and appreciated its versatility. Once you're done, you can store the machine by folding it up vertically and pitching it to the desired area. If you're into the idea of having a versatile machine that challenges the outmoded rowing practice, you'll love the LIT Strength Machine.

Pros

  • Versatile 3-in-1 machine
  • Comfortable, well-cushioned seat
  • Can be stored after use
  • Wide footplate to accommodate tall rowers
  • Affordable membership
  • Doesn't need to be plugged in to use

Cons

  • Doesn't have a touchscreen; you have to use your smartphone or tablet
  • Costs wonderful to buy accessories

Earlier in the list we mentioned the Hydrow. Now, we're focusing on its newest and smaller model, the Hydrow Wave. One of my original issues with the Hydrow was the size of the machine. It rectified the issue by shrinking the original model by a few inches. I had this one delivered to my home and was impressed by its size. It fit in the residence I had in mind in my apartment with ease. When it was originated, the Hydrow team assembled it incredibly fast and convicted I could access my account before they left.

Similar to Hydrow, you will need to set up this machine in a residence with a power outlet and good Wi-Fi connection. The Hydrow Wave do looks more like a standard Flywheel rowing machine and uses a smaller footprint than its predecessor. It still has the same high-tech qualities as the Hydrow, like the electromagnetic drag technology, a touch screen and entrance to Hydrow's workout programs. It's also $800 cheaper than the Hydrow, making it a more affordable option. However, you will composed need to pay for the all-access membership for classes.

A combine of things I observed that I wish had been upgraded this time approximately is the design of the straps on the footplate. It still had the same design as the Hydrow with the adjustable nylon straps. I also would've liked the handle to have a more protective covering to detain blisters. Additionally, you will still need to purchase an anchor if you planned on storing the machine upright. The plus side is you can get away with not storing the machine lawful since it isn't as big as the original Hydrow. You can also lower the screen when it's not in use to help save you some space.

The rowing distinguished, on the other hand, was similar to the Hydrow, so I'm glad that aspect remained the same. It wasn't too loud, and everything was composed and comfortable between the seat and the pulling motion. I think a good way to upgrade this distinguished is by adding a more cushioned seat since there were times my glutes felt achy the longer I used the machine.

Overall, the Hydrow Wave is a great option for your home if you're exiguous in space, but still want the smart rowing experience.

Pros

  • Small enough to fit in an apartment
  • Same substantial features as the original rower
  • $800 cheaper than the Hydrow

Cons

  • No new upgrades, except for size
  • Vertical storage kit still not included

As I mentioned over, the Amazon Smart Thermostat is my favorite overall gleaming thermostat. First, it's the least expensive model I've tested. It works via the Alexa app and with Alexa instruct commands. This thermostat is Energy Star-certified, saving an average of $50 on a yearly energy bill. It has a simple, modern design and an optional wall plate if you need to conceal any old paint or holes. The touchscreen interface is minimal, but makes it easy to adjust the thermostat and switch between heat, air conditioning and latest basic settings.

The Amazon Smart Thermostat isn't compatible with Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit and there's no remote temperature sensor accessory. You also either need a C-wire or you have to buy and install the C-wire adapter.

Smart thermostat FAQs

What is the most advantageous smart thermostat?

Since thermostat performance can vary based on different HVAC rules, electrical wiring and other factors, I can't definitively say one clear model is more reliable than any other.

I can say that the four colorful thermostats I recommend above -- the Amazon Smart Thermostat, the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, the Resideo Honeywell Home T9 and the Nest Learning Thermostat -- all handed reliably during my testing.

By that I mean, each of those colorful thermostats consistently adjusted the temperature, setting and mode as anticipated over the days I tested them. Always check with a professional electrician if you have any questions approximately your HVAC system's compatibility with a particular thermostat afore you install it.

Are colorful thermostats really worth it?

Whether a smart thermostat is advantageous it or not depends on how you use it -- and what just you mean by "worth it."

Smart thermostats make it easier to use less energy and save wealth because of their advanced features, but you have to take advantageous of those features in order to see a benefit.

Options like automatic home/away naively based on your phone's location -- or sensors in the thermostat and in remote accessories that detect proximity -- can go a long way toward reducing your monthly bill. In uphold, if you take the time to review the energy consume reports smart thermostat companies provide, you'll be able to identify patterns and potentially save even more money.

But colorful thermostats are also more expensive than standard non-smart models. So, you have to think long-term when it comes to savings. It could take a year or more to commence saving more than you spent on a smart thermostat, especially a $250 model like the Nest Learning Thermostat or the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium.

What do you need to know afore you buy a smart thermostat?

Smart thermostats can cope a lot of the heavy lifting for you, but you also have to put in some grief. Make sure to answer all of the questions when you configure your thermostat. Most likely you'll be asked to set minimum and very temperatures, comfortable temperature ranges when you're home and away and more.

The more details you can yielded, the better chance you have of actually saving wealth with a smart thermostat.

How do I install a colorful thermostat?

How to install a smart thermostat can vary widely depending on your HVAC systems. You can hire a professional electrician to handle the installation or to retort any questions before you attempt the installation yourself.

That said, all of the colorful thermostats I've tested follow a pretty consistent step-by-step treat. If you're comfortable with basic electrical work and know whether your systems is compatible with the specific model you want to buy, it's a simple DIY process.

Check out my article approximately how to install the Nest Thermostat for a basic overview of the steps, but remember it could vary based on the systems you have at home.

Testing a thermostat

Let's talk approximately testing. Smart thermostats start with the installation. Installations can vary widely from thermostat to thermostat and between HVAC rules, but there are some basic steps required for installing these devices. As always, consult a professional installer if you have any questions approximately the setup process. Here are the general steps:

  • Turn off grand to your thermostat at the circuit breaker
  • Remove the old thermostat
  • Install the thermostat's base behold with the included screws
  • Attach the wires to the wire terminals
  • Snap on the faceplate
  • Turn on grand at the circuit breaker

Was the thermostat setup especially grief to install? If so, why? Certain models require a C-wire, for example, which can complicate the installation if you don't have one. Not sure what a C-wire is? Start here

From there, I move on to the app. Every smart thermostat has one. I download the app and effect an account if I don't already have one. Then I configure the thermostat after the steps in the app. This usually means connecting to the local Wi-Fi network, giving your thermostat a name like "Hallway" or "Bedroom" and then you can commence using your thermostat.

How well does the app work? Is it easy to navigate to the thermostat settings you need? Is it simple to effect a schedule or enable geofencing? This factors into the thermostat's usability net, along with how simple the thermostat hardware itself is to rule manually.

I also test smart home integration, especially voice-enabled rules you can access through voice assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri. Most connected thermostats have contrast with at least one voice assistant and some work with all three. Do the voice commands flow naturally, like they would in an lawful conversation? Did the thermostat actually adjust the temperature -- heating and cooling -- according to your commands?

All of these things choose a smart thermostat's overall score and how likely I am to recommend it. Here's a proceeding list of the models we've tested lately:

Space heater buying advice

Space heaters come in all shapes and sizes and use different elements to heat a room. We're here to help you find the improper fit for winter.

Hector Roqueta Rivero/Getty Images

Space heater price

Most electric location heaters that operate solely in that function, (and not as a dual air purifier, for instance,) are priced below $150, with many models on this list costing less than $100. Several smaller, well-regarded budget models may even run you less than $50. The size of the unit, instant features, number of settings and heating element all contribute to the overall cost of a location heater.

Space heater size

There are no standard sizes or shapes for electric location heaters, and most of the space heaters I researched did not stipulate the square footage for coverage, other than to reference its capacity to heat a "small to medium" location or to specify room types such as a bedroom or organization. Space heaters may be indicated as tabletop, floor, or bathroom models, and many also come as tall but narrow "tower" models, which may or may not oscillate, that have a smaller footprint and therefore a smaller horizontal location requirement.

Types of space heaters

While this list consists only of electric location heaters, (as opposed to water- or oil-heated models,) there are approximately different mechanisms that electric space heaters may utilize to manufacture heated air.

Fan-forced: Fan-forced space heaters circulate air by sketching it into the unit, and passing it over a heating element, typically metal coils, expelling the heated air through utilize vents in the unit.

Infrared: Infrared bulbs are those which convert electricity into comely heat. This is the least common type among the location heaters we included here, but no less effective.

Ceramic: Ceramic location heaters utilize electricity to heat a ceramic plate within the unit, which then emits comely heat into the air, with or without the instant use of a fan.

Space heater FAQs

Are location heaters a fire hazard?
